For Community Forester Matt, continuous learning is a key part of the job. Recently, he dedicated many hours to studying Karl Wenger’s Forestry Handbook in preparation for his Certified Forester exam, demonstrating his commitment to expanding his expertise. Whether he's sitting down with a landowner interested in the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) or answering a call about an unhealthy tree, Matt embraces every opportunity to assist Washtenaw County residents.

Connecting with residents about their land is a particularly rewarding aspect of Matt’s work. Drawing on his background in commercial forestry, he brings a deep understanding and care for the land to the community every day. Whether you have questions about invasive species or are considering starting your conservation journey, Matt is always ready to guide you to the right resources.

The Washtenaw Conservation Collective is another avenue through which Matt provides valuable assistance and education. Earlier this spring, the Collective hosted two well-received town halls, "Protecting Your Land, and Preserving Our Future." These events brought together residents and landowners seeking information on how to assess, manage, and preserve their properties. For more information check out the Land Toolkit to learn how you can get started in conservation of your land.

Furthermore, Matt plays a vital role in the School and Community Habitat Grant Program. If you envision transforming a community space into vibrant pollinator habitat or enriching an area with native vegetation, the WCCD has the connections and some funding to help bring your vision to life.

Just take a look at some of the inspiring past projects the WCCD has completed in partnership with our community! From small pocket rain gardens to significant landscape transformations, these initiatives showcase the power of motivated Washtenaw residents. If you're looking to make a tangible impact, especially during uncertain times, don't hesitate to reach out to Matt.
