This project was a 2022 Habitat Grant Awardee.
We envisioned a Native Plant Garden that was not only visually appealing to our human visitors, but also welcoming and supportive to our local wildlife, including pollinators and birds. Our goal was to transform an underutilized space, at the entrance of our Community Center, into an appealing opportunity for education and enrichment, as well as a visual illustration of how native plants and pollinator-friendly planting can be both functional and aesthetically-pleasing.
Our primary goals have been accomplished and are still growing as Community Center Guests are treated to signage detailing information about each plant as well as asking staff questions regularly about maintaining the garden. Ongoing education is occurring with not only staff but residents who enjoy the garden as they walk into the Community Center.
The long-term vision for this space is to re-dedicate this entrance as the main entrance to the Pittsfield Township Community Center. A newly constructed patio, to the left of the gardens, has become a focal point and additional attraction to this location. Our vision incorporates the Native Plant Landscape into this patio area, which allows demonstrations to be safely conducted and provides a main aesthetic feature of our Community Center and Park. Park maintenance staff maintain this space weekly. Residents walking into the Community Center have given very positive feedback.
Staff has been educated on the importance of Native Plant Gardens, and they take pride in the upkeep of the garden. Maintenance of this area is weekly, due to its high visibility and importance. This includes weeding, watering, mulching, etc.
