New Forest to MI Faucet Video: How Forests Improve Drinking Water in Washtenaw County

October 8, 2025

In partnership with the DNR Forest Stewardship Program, the Washtenaw County Conservation District (WCCD) is part of an initiative called “Forest to MI Faucet,” created to educate Michigan residents about the connection between forests and drinking water.

Other priorities of the program include:

  • Helping municipal water utilities implement source water protection plans to lower treatment costs.
  • Protecting forests from land use change through conservation easements, to retain critical forest areas within watersheds.
  • Promoting sustainable forest management through landowner education, forest certification, Master Logger programs, prescribed fire, and other methods.
  • Expanding forest cover by planting trees in strategic locations, especially in riparian zones within urban and agricultural areas.

As the educational component of the initiative, WCCD recently produced a new video that highlights how the trees and natural landscapes of Washtenaw County play a crucial role in filtering and protecting the water that flows into homes and businesses every day.

It’s a powerful reminder of the hidden connections between our environment and the resources we rely on.
