How to Get Less Junk Mail
Send a letter to the following address(es), with the listed information. Make sure to sign the letter. Send a separate letter for each mailing name. Decrease in volume should occur in 3 months.
Why?
- The average person gets only 1.5 personal letters each week, compared to 10.8 pieces of junk mail.
- Each person will receive almost 560 pieces of junk mail this year.
- That's 4.5 million tons of junk mail produced each year!
- 44% of all junk mail is thrown in the trash, unopened and unread.
- Approximately 40% of the solid mass that makes up our landfills is paper and paperboard waste.
- 100 million trees are ground up each year to produce junk mail.

Here's another idea for unwanted credit card solicitations. If the solicitation includes a postage paid, business reply envelope, tear up the application form into small pieces, put pieces in return envelope and mail back. The credit card company pays the postage, and you get a chance to vent your distaste for such solicitations.
For Unsolicited Commercial E-mail
Visit the Direct Marketing Association's e-Mail Preference Service to add your e-mail address to a suppression file. Marketers that use this service send their list electronically to e-MPS. All e-mail addresses registered with e-MPS are removed from the marketer's list. The "cleaned" list is returned electronically to the marketer.
